As fans celebrate title in dominant fashion, a summer of farewells might lie ahead for Sporting

Sporting's 2023–24 Portuguese title could easily be told as a straightforward story of sporting dominance. But the season raised a more interesting question: how did a club coming off a disappointing campaign rebuild itself so quickly, and to what extent could its own success make it harder to keep that team together?

The challenge was to explain that transformation without relying only on results or a celebratory narrative. The story needed to connect recruitment decisions, tactical ideas, individual performance, advanced metrics and market valuation to show why Rúben Amorim's Sporting became so efficient — and why key players from that campaign immediately began attracting interest from wealthier clubs.

I structured the story around Amorim's rebuild and the impact of Viktor Gyökeres, signed for €21 million after a season in which Sporting had shown attacking limitations and increased defensive vulnerability. The analysis combines narrative context with metrics such as expected goals, expected assists, progressive carries, progressive passes received and non-penalty expected goals conceded to show how the signing changed the team's way of playing.

The piece also broadens its focus to Sporting's player-development model. Using Transfermarkt data, I built a table comparing estimated player values before and after their time under Amorim for names including Morten Hjulmand, Ousmane Diomandé, Pedro Porro, João Palhinha, Manuel Ugarte and Gyökeres. This layer connected sporting performance, individual development and economic value within the same narrative.

The result is an analytical feature that demonstrates my ability to write professionally in English about European football, combining reporting, context, tactical interpretation and data in a long-form narrative. Rather than treating statistics as isolated elements, the story uses them to support an editorial argument about squad building, performance and value creation.

Within my portfolio, this work is particularly relevant because it makes two central aspects of my career visible: my football expertise and my ability to produce journalism for an international audience in English.
